wallpaper*, the international design, fashion and lifestyle magazine, has published its annual design awards issue, now on sale. 11 judges’ awards have been selected by an esteemed international panel that includes paola antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at MoMA, architect bjarke ingels of BIG, philippe malouin, wallpaper* designer of the year 2018, and artist do ho suh.

 

in addition to milan, which was awarded this year’s BEST CITY, ten other judges’ awards were given out in celebration of the world’s most life-enhancing places, products, people, and phenomena. 

 

the award for best domestic design went to ‘astro’ by nichetto studio for tubes, a fan heater designed as a ‘spaceship’ which incorporates air purification technology. meanwhile, french designer pierre yovanovitch picked up the crown for designer of the year for his debut furniture series and celebrated interior projects. best new restaurant was awarded to the michelin-star noma in copenhagen, designed by bjarke ingels group as an ‘intimate garden village’. BIG also picked up the life-enhancer of the year award for its ‘gople’ lamp for artemide, which nourishes the growth of houseplants. also with the environment in mind, the plant-powered deodorant by myro won the honor of best new grooming product.

 

in the world of architecture, the recently-opened V&A dundee by kengo kuma and associates won best new public building, with its geometric design inspired by scotland’s dramatic cliffs. the award for best new private house was given to the nest by porky hefer, a organically shaped abode set in the namib desert. meanwhile, perched on a cliff edge on the volcanic ulleungdo island, the curvaceous healing stay kosmos was honored in the category of best new hotel. in the fashion universe, rick owens was honored for the best A/W18 women’s fashion collection, while salvatore ferragamo took the prize for best men’s fashion collection of the same season.

now in its 15th edition, the wallpaper* design awards 2019 celebrates the world’s most pulse-raising and life-enhancing places, products, people and phenomena. the february 2019 ‘design awards’ issue is split into two parts: the first covers categories devised by wallpaper* and its extended global family of contributors, writers and curators — ranging from best roofscape to best repurpose and best future vision. the second section comprises the most prestigious honors: 11 judges’ awards selected by an esteemed international panel.
