thailand faces environmental plight as a result of the overflowing garbage and inadequate system of waste disposal. if we look only at the bangkok metropolitan area, 9,000 tons of solid waste are being disposed every day, costing the city 2 billions baht (USD 700 million) annually.

in the industrial sector, managing waste and production scraps is an ongoing dilemma. a wide variety of industrial scraps include wood cut-offs; plastic, polymers and resins scraps; fabric remnants; leather remnants; glass; metal and alloy scraps, most of which are headed for landfills.

in order to encourage the re-utilization of scraps-creating values, thailand’s industrial technology assistance program (ITAP) under national science and technology development agency (NSTDA), has developed the ‘waste-to-wealth’ project an initiative that addresses global warming issues by creating valuable furniture objects from scraps. teams of consultants have been enlisted to diagnose problems and explored ‘value-creation’ possibilities from scraps and to provide technical and design support to participating manufacturers.

the aims of the ‘waste-to-wealth’ initiative are: (1) to create awareness about environmental problems from solid wastes; (2) to exchange design solutions and strategies; (3) to disseminate knowledge about scraps categorization, reclamation techniques as well as production processes, among small-medium size enterprises (SMEs). a more competitive, efficient and environmentally responsible manufacturing would be the overarching goal of this project.

at the 2011 TIFF thailand international furniture fair, waste-to-wealth displayed a range of furniture pieces constructed from materials which would have otherwise ended up in the waste disposal system.
