Through WDC Campus, World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026 softens the edges of academic vision and social practice, reshaping the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art as a real-world laboratory. From July 3 to August 9, 2026, the campus hosts a summer exhibition alongside a series of discursive workshops centered on design exploration and our future coexistence. The initiative places the next generation of designers at the forefront, synthesizing perspectives of over 20 national and international universities to drive a sustainable and democratic future. This interdisciplinary discourse connects students, start-ups, and research institutions to find innovative answers to the pressing social and ecological challenges of our time.

THE SHIFT FROM HUMAN TO PLANET-CENTRIC DESIGN

The project of WDC 2026 proposes essential questions about our responsibility toward the planet and the path toward a carbon-neutral circular economy, under the guiding principle of Design for Democracy.

Roland Lambrette, founder and partner at Design FRM GmbH, underscores that the campus represents the radical ingenuity of the next wave of creators, who perceive design as a transformative tool for society. A shift that marks the crucial transition from human-centric to planet-centric design.

DIVERSE THINKING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSFORMATION

From July 3 to August 9, 2026, the World Design Capital (WDC) summer exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt displays over 150 interdisciplinary projects, demonstrating the role of design in shaping a democratic future. Among the projects of emerging talents and students, award-winning works from renowned institutions like Hessen Design, the RIMOWA Design Prize, the DDC Award, and the Red Dot Design Award are presented. The opening takes place at the three-day Campus festival from July 3-5, 2026, materializing the insights from previous workshops into a large-scale exhibition. In a gesture of radical accessibility, the event is open to the public free of charge, fostering a direct synergy between academia, industry, politics and society.

Beyond the exhibition, the discourse is sustained through a series of workshops at the WDC Hub, offering a weekly program of panels and excursions starting in mid-April, 2026, and continuing throughout the summer. Highlighted by Diana Tayo Osobu’s ‘Design with Attitude’ and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s visionary ‘CorpseCraft No. 6–7 – Bauhaus Future Fiction series’, these workshops, steered by Prof. Markus Weisbeck and Vera Kunz, aim to materialize diverse design thinking methodologies for social and environmental transformation.
