intersecting wooden components nestle contoured PET seat for xingcheng zhu’s XOX chair
the concept fuses elements of nature and zen to create a warm and contemporary furniture piece that exudes openness.
Xingcheng Zhu draws on nature and Zen
Breaking away from traditional chair forms, Xingcheng Zhu’s XOX Chair merges elements of nature and Zen, resulting in a warm and contemporary furniture piece. The chair takes its name from its wooden, X-shaped intersecting components and O-shaped seat, its circular contour embracing the user’s body and offering a sense of comfort reminiscent of the soft curves of meandering rivers and branches of trees. The intersecting elements of the chair’s frame are crafted from natural wood, its tones and textures infusing warmth and familiarity to the overall design. The interplay between the wood’s grain and the clarity of the transparent PET material, recycled from plastic bottles, achieves a balance between nature and modernity.

pet sourced from recycled plastic bottles shapes xox chair
Xingcheng Zhu’s approach incorporated user experience design methods for continuous research and refinement. In a nod to sustainability, the designer integrates the XOX Chair with transparent yet sturdy PET sourced from recycled plastic bottles. This material, combined with the cushioned seat, ensures a comfortable sitting experience. Additionally, incorporating Zen principles, the transparent body of the chair enhances the overall design by allowing an unobstructed line of sight within any space it occupies, creating a feeling of spaciousness and openness.
