‘living tools’ by leipzig-based designer yi-cong lu are a selection of furniture objects which accommodate today’s varied lifestyles. presented at DMY berlin 2011, the designs are flexible and can be adjusted according to user’s individual space, testing the limits of conventional architecture. for example, a living room can be a temporary office and in the next minute function as impromptu sleeping quarters. included in the series is ‘lightboy’, a lamp that can be quickly set up anywhere – leaning against a wall like a broom, or freestanding. the adjustable lamp shade illuminates its surrounding environment in various ways. the overall dimensions of the lamp measure 60 x 205 x 30 cm when folded, and 60 x 205 x 200 when open for use. each lamp is made from birch wood, textile (polyester), sand, PVC and felt.

‘living tools’ also includes ‘panel’ a multi-purpose furniture object which, depending on its orientation – standing, lying or hanging – becomes a room divider, a desk, clothes hanger or bookshelf. see designboom’s article on yi-cong lu’s ‘panel’ here.
