industrial design student yotam sion’s graduation project for the bezalel academy of art and design deals with a dynamic aesthetic study of rust stains and deformation of metal surfaces. different diameters of metal rings undergo a high weight pressing that distorts their shape, and exposes their surface for the oxidation process to occur. as a result, the rusted rings pile up into a vase composed of a range of shapes, patterns and colors.

the process ends with the casting of polyurethane inside the vase, so that all the metal parts are locked into a single body that contains water. yotam sion further explains that the rust continues to oxidize the metal, and over time will change the look and colors depending on humidity levels and age, until finally decaying. the plastic body, however, will remain as a skeleton and the final remnant of the object.
