‘ljus’ — which means ‘light’ in swedish — is the title of the latest furniture collection by younjeong lee of leesimjeonsim design. as its name alludes to, the series is based on the natural phenomenon of auroras, in which mesmerizing colors light up the night sky, most commonly around the arctic and antarctic.

the ljus series comprises a circular coaster and the ‘full moon’ and ‘half moon’ tables, which both come in three different sizes. they are all crafted in wood using lacquer and silk screen techniques to layer the subtle spread of color, just as the aurora borealis, aurora polaris, and aurora australis embroider the night sky with radiant light.

leesimjeonsim design was established in 2019 and manufactures furniture and small objects using wood. the name of the studio combines the names of its founder and director, younjeong lee and pil joon jeon, respectively. the main concept behind the studio’s work is to convey the sensibility of timber with minimal forms. the projects incorporate different themes and stories with the goal of creating products that offer both aesthetic beauty and practicality.
