having previously transformed real baguettes, batards and croissants into functional lamps during maison & objet 2017, japanese artist yukiko morita cooks up a new edition to the PAMPSHADE collection. ‘naaaan time’ is a clock made from real naan bread, a ‘loosely shaped and delicious-looking work of art that tells the time in a calm and relaxing way.’ the ‘ingredients’ used in the clock include flour, salt, yeast and sugar to create the naan bread, which is then coated with a layer of resin to protect the bread from decaying. a clock dial and batteries added to the surface of the bread turns the edible into a functional object for the home.

yukiko morita draws from her love of baking, and time spent working in a bakery for her ongoing PAMPSHADE collection, where each unique piece is handmade from 100% real artisanal bread. while the artist has expanded the series of lamps to include a variety of baked bread shapes, ‘naaaan time’ is her first foray into timepiece design. the object is inspired by salvador dali’s ‘the persistence of memory’, the famous 1931 painting which depicts a surreal scene of melting clocks in a natural landscape.

with every ‘naaaan time’ originating from a real baked edible, each piece bears a different texture and expression. the objects are coated with an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal sealant to protect the lamp for years to come. ‘the fact that it doesn’t have a dial and only tells you the time roughly makes it even better,’ says the artist. ‘I want to live in the general sense of time without saying too much about the details, just like naan’s loose form, and take it easy.’
