An almost impossibly transparent and fragile design, the Zero Thickness Chair was created by two Tbilisi-based design studios — XYZ Integrated Architecture and Sandro Lominashvili — as an exploration of steel construction. At first glance, the duo of chairs captivate with their almost ethereal transparency, creating an illusion of seat that appear unable to support any weight. However, their forms are robust with joinery achieved by welding sturdy steel tubes in a position of zero thickness geometry.

zero thickness chair embodies duality of delicacy and strength

XYZ Integrated Architecture (more here) and Sandro Lominashvili’s (more here) choice to weld the tubes with this construction method brings forth the concept of zero thickness, also known as non-manifold geometry, where an edge is shared by more than two faces. This typically occurs when a face or edge is extruded but remains in its original position, resulting in two identical edges directly overlapping each other. Crafted from steel and MDF, the compact chairs together embody a duality of delicacy and strength.
