the international design competition is jointly arranged
by ELECTROLUX and designboom.
participation is open to officially registered university students
(registered at the time of entry submission)
from every country in the world.
free registration and acceptance of these conditions of entry is required.

please observe – in particular – the conditions applicable to the intellectual property rights in Works.

01 - the subject of the international competition is
‘imagine the home in 2020’

how will we live? how will we entertain our guests?
how will we keep our homes clean?
we are looking for product ideas around
- cleaning clothes
- cleaning dishes
- cleaning floors
- storing drinks
- storing food
- cooking...

Applicants are requested to submit their designs and concepts ('Works')
for one or both of the 2 categories:
a – SCENARIO : focus on a future ambient - home life in the year 2020 around the question points above
b – PRODUCT : focus around a product that answers a product idea above

02 – awards and acknowledgements
a jury will select the top 3 winning entries, the designers will be granted
a cash prize award of
Euro 5000,
Euro 3000 and
Euro 2000 respectively
plus an appliance starter kit (suitable for the applicant’s region).

a minimum of 12 students
(officially registered university students at the time of entry submission)
will be selected to participate, all expenses paid, in a design event within stockholm,
interfacing with top designers and climaxing into attendance at 'Future Design Days' on nov. 14th. 2005
student entrants should keep week 45 (november. 10 - 14th) available for this purpose.
an exhibition of the winning and shortlisted entries will travel around the world
and as always designboom will publish an exhaustive Works report.

03 – the jury and the design criteria
the jury is composed of :

2. Thomas Johansson, Design Director Floorcare
3. Yves Béhar , Industrial Designer
4. Tom Kovac, Architect
5. Tokujin Yoshioka, Industrial Designer
6. Birgit Lohmann, Editor in Chief of Designboom
the jury will award designs and concepts which are innovative in terms
of their formal / technological aspects as well as their functional ones.
submissions should be the applicant’s own creation,
shall not currently be in production and shall not previously
have been submitted to competitions, published or exhibited.

05 – registration
registrations are closed

06 – deadline for submission of entries
Works could be submitted through september 22 2005.

07. the contents of the submission
you will be requested to supply:
(I) - up to 3 files (images or a composition of more images) of your project.
please note: use only (rgb) .gif, .jpeg, (72 dpi) max 100 kb each file.
image size max 600 (width) x 700 (height) pixels.
if you are not able to reduce the size of your file please see
the tutorial on how reduce the size of your file with photoshop.
- the original high-resolution image(s)
will be requested if your Work is shortlisted

(II) - explanation of ideas and student declaration
IDEA - a brief description of your Work.
(english text only, the description is expected to be concise)

STUDENT - if you win you will be asked to verify your attendance
and your student credentials within 48 hours of notification.

09 – intellectual property rights to the submission
The Applicant acknowledges that the Works submitted are his/her or the team’s own original creation
and that the Works do not include nor infringe third party intellectual property rights.

The Applicant grants ELECTROLUX a non-exclusive territorially unrestricted right to use the Works for internal evaluation purposes.
The aforesaid shall however not include a right for ELECTROLUX to commercially use the Works.
The Applicant grants to Electrolux an exclusive option to, before Nov 31, 2006,
acquire the intellectual property rights to the Works in accordance with the conditions in section 10.
If ELECTROLUX does not exercise the option, the intellectual property rights
shall be vested in the Applicant and the Applicant shall be entitled to use his / her Works after Nov 31, 2006.

If and when ELECTROLUX exercises its option,
ELECTROLUX and the Applicant shall negotiate a reasonable price.

The Applicant acknowledges that ELECTROLUX shall not be put in a less favourable position than
if the Works had never been presented to ELECTROLUX.
The extensive design and development works carried out by ELECTROLUX could touch upon
the same or identical idea submitted as part of the Works. Therefore, the Applicant acknowledges
that the know-how which was already within the ELECTROLUX group when the Works were
submitted or which at a later stage and independently from the Works will be developed by ELECTROLUX or
which Electrolux otherwise benefits from can be used without restrictions,
and that such use will not infringe the Applicant’s intellectual property rights.

10 assignment of intellectual property rights if ELECTROLUX exercises its option
If and when ELECTROLUX exercises the option set forth in section 09 above,
the Applicant shall assign the intellectual property rights to the Works on the conditions set forth below.

Legal title and any and all intellectual property rights in and to the Works
are finally and fully assigned and transferred to ELECTROLUX.

The Applicant represents and warrants that
(i) The Works has not been and will not be assigned or transferred,
(ii) No licenses to the Works have or will be granted and
(iii) The Works is and will remain free from any and all other encumbrances of whatever kind or nature.

The assignment and transfer shall include all methods and forms
of use and exploitation, including any and all new technology, and it shall not be limited in time or territory.

ELECTROLUX may, in its sole discretion and without informing or consulting with the Applicant,
(i) Change, alter, amend, add to, delete from and otherwise modify, including but not limited to,any and all cuts,
edits, rearrangements and other alterations, additions and deletions, the Works and
(ii) Assign and transfer or license the Works.

ELECTROLUX shall not be obliged to use, publish or otherwise communicate the Works to the public.

ELECTROLUX may, in its sole discretion take any and all measures to verify,
document and protect its proprietary rights in and to the Works, including, but not limited to,
any and all filings and submissions with any registry or any other relevant authority.
The Applicant shall assist ELECTROLUX in taking such measures.

The Applicant waives any and all present and future claims for moral rights in and to the Works.

ELECTROLUX shall in its sole discretion, have the right to defend, compromise and settle any third party
claim relating to the Works. The Applicant shall cooperate fully with ELECTROLUX in connection therewith.

The Applicant shall immediately upon becoming aware thereof, notify ELECTROLUX
of any and all possible or alleged third party infringements on ELECTROLUX' exclusive right in and to the Works
as well as any and all third party claims in relation to the Works.

11 - no reimbursement or employment
Applicants are not entitled to any compensation for Work performed or reimbursement for any costs.
The Applicant’s participation shall not constitute any employment, assignment or offer of employment or assignment.

12 - use of the applicant’s data
designboom and ELECTROLUX will use the data you submit in connection with the competition
for the purpose of administering the competition and evaluating the Works.

13 - exhibition and publication
By participating in the competition, all participants authorise designboom
and ELECTROLUX to publish and exhibit all the designs (including project data submitted)
– waiving compensation – at exhibitions and events and/or to use them in any
publications that the organisers may deem suitable and/or necessary.

14 - applicable law and dispute resolution
These conditions shall be interpreted and construed in accordance with the substantive laws of Sweden.
Disputes resulting from or in connection with the Works shall be resolved
by the Stockholm district court in the first instance..
