Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia
Fantasy connects Japanese woodblock prints with the worlds of manga and anime at M+ in Hong Kong. Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia follows these connections from the nineteenth century to the present, examining how imagined characters and environments respond to the circumstances in which they are made.
The exhibition begins with earlier traditions, including Chinese shadow puppetry and Tibetan Buddhist scrolls, before tracing Surrealism’s circulation through Asia and the rise of Japanese manga. Its final chapter follows fantastical anime aesthetics into contemporary design and digital culture, revealing how these images travel between disciplines and across regions.
