burger king ad angers mexican officials

one of burger king’s latest promotions has offended mexican officials who demanded that the television and print advertisements shown in the UK and spain be pulled. the spots for burger king’s ‘texican whopper’ feature a short mexican wrestler draped in his country’s flag and a stereotypical american cowboy.

mexico’s ambassador to spain, jorge zermeno said ‘this advertisement denigrates the image of our country and uses improperly mexico’s national flag‘. mexico has strict laws prohibiting the defamation of the flag. zermeno also added ‘it offends mexicans and mexico.‘

burger king has since stated that ‘the campaign falls fully within the legal parameters of the UK and spain and were not intended to offend anyone‘ however they have decided to scrap the campaign out of respect for the mexican culture and its people. the company said in a statement sent to the associated press it would ‘air redesigned ads as soon as commercially possible – the revised campaign will focus solely on the texican whopper sandwich and will not feature any characters or the use of the mexican flag‘. last year, absolut vodka angered many US citizens with an ad campaign in mexico that depicted an early 19th century map showing chunks of the USA as part of mexico. this campaign was also dropped.

  • This is the risk you run using stereotypes to market your xxxx.

    DaTruth says:
  • i would think it is good marketing if those people weren’t sensitive. it actually signifies peace between the 2 regions.. unless the mexican officials ain’t in for peace..

    ray says:
  • I am “EL CACHITO” wrestler in the ad. I have something I would like to say about all this. After all i am the short mexican.

    chris saurinstein says:
  • maybe mexico should worry about their drug cartels more than burger king advertisements, and apologize to america for being such xxxx neighbors.

    mike says:
  • its not really a sensitivity issue, the fact of the matter is that wearing the mexican flag on anything except a flagpole is against the law in mexico, so when this happens outside of mexico, be it due to ignorance or malice, its the mexican authorities’ responsibility to denounce this. I agree the ad is funny, cute even, too bad a) its creators didn’t know about the flag issue… and b) there’s still such blatant bigotry as displayed in some of these comments (maybe you should take a cue from Obama, who just this thursday paid mexico a very successful and cooperative visit)

    andresr says:
  • EL CACHITO IS VERY REAL!! HIS NAME IS CHRIS SAURINSTEIN!! HE IS A VERY HANDSOME MAN WHO RESIDES IN LOS ANGELES. HE IS VERY BUSY LATELY WITH FAN MAIL AND SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS. HE HAS BECOME FAMOUS AND WORLD KNOWN AFTER THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING HIM. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uqwGAxBn-M

  • I saw Chris Saurinstein at Starbucks yesterday in Marina Del Rey. I knew it was him because his tattoos were showing and he’s short. He has the goatee and he’s totally recognizeable! he is so cute and funny. He seemed really down to earth. He gave me and my sister a hug and took pics with us. he even gave us autographs. that made our trip to los angeles. I wanted to see him in his El Cachito suit. hehehehe..but he was wearing regular clothes. my sister really thinks hes hot! He said hes making a movie now.

    I think he is cute

    beth says:
  • I think Mexico needs to lighten up. Isnt el cachito or chris saurinstein mexican? i mean didint they take that into consideration? why would he waant to make fun of mexico if he is mexican? i heard hes going to be on jay leno so im going to watch it to see if leno asks him if hes mexican. most likely i will pay to see the movie he is in if its a comedy. Obviously chris saurinstein is funny if mexico is mad that they are making fun.

    cliff says:

  • I´d like to say something regarding this comment
    “chris saurinstein 04.17.09

maybe mexico should worry about their drug cartels more than burger king advertisements, and apologize to america for being such xxxx neighbors.”

Maybe also “americans” must be worried about not consuming more drugs! I mean does anybody has noticed that the drugs incoming from Colombia, Mexico and other countries stops and arrives always to USA, offering and demmand my friend.

Regarding the commercial… Is not offensive for me, what i’m thinking is that so common here in Mexico, we don’t care on get and consuming McDonalds, Burger King, WWE, and everything that cames from the USA

But also, instead of getting annoyed for this kind of estereotypes i could be more annoyed (also worried) for the education, for everysingle dude that preffers work on the streets, every guy that sells “pirateria” and also other things, come on, Mexico is a great country ( i work for PS here in Mexico if we do not have the potential to make great things Ross Perot even think on stablish this office) But also this big big country has a very small people in culture, on education.

    COME ON MEXICO! WAKE UP!

    DESPIERTEN MEXICANOS! CARAJO!
