Irving Penn’s photographs allow me to see my own designs
We’re still exploring PENN & FASHION at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, this time looking at Irving Penn’s striking black-and-white photographs of Issey Miyake’s creations. Their collaboration was remarkably unconventional: Penn never attended Miyake’s fashion shows, and Miyake never attended Penn’s photoshoots. Instead, garments traveled from Paris to New York, where Penn transformed them into powerful compositions of form, movement, and geometry. The exhibition describes their relationship through the Japanese concept of A-UN, an intuitive, unspoken understanding that allowed photography and fashion to enter into a unique creative dialogue.

Made from salvaged exhaust pipes, mufflers, and brightly coloured pleated paper, the monumental sculpture behaves like a living system, appearing to spread, evolve, or mutate in response to the Grand Palais.
I felt inspired by the beauty of the vineyards and the regenerative culture I encountered there, but I was also curious about the physical forces within nature that make it all happen. I began recording the sound of the soil with my partner, who is a sound artist, and learned that the healthier the soil, the more alive its soundscapes are. I then brought these recordings home and used cymatics to make the sounds visible, using materials such as sand and water to reveal their patterns. This process became the starting point for the sculpture.

We’ve just stopped by PENN & FASHION at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris, where we discovered the fascinating creative collaboration between Irving Penn, Issey Miyake, and Japanese graphic designer Ikko Tanaka. Between 1987 and 1999, Miyake and Midori Kitamura sent selected garments from Paris to New York for Penn to photograph, transforming the designer’s creations into striking studies of form, gesture, and abstraction. Tanaka then brought another dimension to the photographs through his bold, minimalist posters, bringing fashion, photography, and graphic design together.
