designer's own words:

This installation takes inspiration from the Japanese tradition to spend the Christmas time walking around the city enjoying the lights and exchanging presents.Living Tree is an immersive and interactive light installation recreating the iconic Christmas tree shape thanks to an array of optical fiber filaments in a open space, where people can walk in, connect and donate a gift to their lovers or to someone who they want to thank. The installation is an invitation to visitors to relate with who is important to them, reacting to the movement changing the lights' colour from the cold range when the space is empty to the warm range when the presence of people has been detected to emphasize the importance of the warmth coming from the human interaction, especially during the Christmas time. Living Tree can be installed indoor and outdoor, ideally in a low lit environment, it's composed by a suspended perforated metal sheet supported 2,80 meters from the ground by steel cables. Falling from the metallic ceiling there are 576 optical fiber filaments that people can touch and pass through, above the visitor's head lie 36 motion sensors that detect movement and thanks to 36 Arduino UNO boards that translate the motion to a signal transmitted to as many RGB LED light sources Living Tree reacts changing its colours.
