Afterlife of kimono

Afterlife of kimono by Kasia Mochi from japan

designer's own words:

Nowadays the kimono became a symbol of tradition rather than a fashion item. This project aims to make a connection between the beautiful world of Japanese tradition and modern fashion, creating a collection of clothes with hidden kimono references: layers, art of tying bows, matching patterns.

Japanese tradition is to put deep consideration for every object and waste nothing. The project started with an affection and will to preserve the heritage of many neglected but unique old kimonos that use excellent quality silk and are often hand painted or embroidered with beautiful patterns. This collection gives afterlife to vintage, used kimonos that are unstitched and remade into modern fashion.

The Afterlife collection starts with a fancy dress with a belt tied in a traditional Japanese way symbolizing a happy occasion, skirt made with many layers of materials referencing traditional way of wearing many kimonos for a special occasion. A dress that looks like an apron (a common sight on Japanese streets) but is a sexy dress on the back.

The dress visible on the photographs is the first prototype for this collection and was made in Japan by a tailor who shared my love for vintage kimonos.
