CODED KIMONO

CODED KIMONO by Ruby Woodhouse from uk

designer's own words:

Unlike various interpretations of western clothes, the Kimono has become a symbol to convey and individual attitude towards societal conventions and national identity. There are numerous meanings behind the prints used on a kimono signifying things such as; family, history, gender, formality, season, age, fast and class. Taking this idea of expression through symbolism I intend to use the kimono as the canvas for ideas. Pattern as medium to convey a message. I have turned a typeface into a code to create seemingly abstract designs that contain hidden sentences. Wearable messages of support. This links with the popular slogan T-shirts but conveys the text in a more subtle way. An understanding between the wearer and others who know the code. You don't have to shout about it.
