designer's own words:

Just add water and other electrolyte liquid (soda, coffee or even beer) and the lamp glows!

Fuel cells in the lamp extracts electrons from the electrolyte solution and generates electricity to power the EL (electro-luminescent) sheet lampshade.

No wires. No batteries. No bulbs.

Glow can be powered by left over coffee or soda water thus giving new life to these liquid that is suppose to be poured away. By generating electricity from these liquid, there is no need to consume batteries and thus no disposal of dry battery cells.

The lamp base is designed in the form of an cup to suggest its function of containing coffee or soda or beer and also adds the function of it being easily portable. Since glow doesnt need wires, it can be carried along by the user to where he needs lighting. Clean design also allows for easy cleaning of the product.

EL sheets produces glowing light without heat. This makes a very comfortable light source to be around. Also due to how Glow lamp functions, it is easy to picture glow as a night lamp before sleep. Where you pour your left over drink into the lamp base and it lights up and slowly dims down as you sleep. You can also carry it around in the house at night to provide portable lighting. The lamp glows without a light bulb and thus adds a magical touch to it. This context of the product and magical feeling adds an emotive aspect to the product thus prolonging its lifespan as the user is less likely to dispose of it.
