GWEILO DESCRIPTION:

What would light look like without a fixture or housing? What if the form was the light source itself, free to take on any shape? What if light could engage more than just the ocular sense? What if light could pool, drip or drape? What if light was something we could touch and feel? What if light could create space?

These were the questions that gave rise to the Gweilo Series.

Gweilo is a new type of lighting series that redefines the notion of a light fixture by transforming the source itself into sculpted light.

Thin sheets of LED bulbs are carefully molded into beautiful dynamic forms. Each light is hand sculpted by an artist in its hot plastic state, allowing for infinite possibility in the shape, size and detail of the finished object. Waterproof LED bulbs allow for use in wet areas, such as in spas or outdoors, as landscape elements. The low voltage characteristics of the LED’s themselves allows for battery powered versions that can bring design into nature, but also for years of service life without the necessity of changing them.

In addition, by using the plastic to disburse the light, LED bulbs (already the lighting benchmark for long-life and energy efficiency) become even more effective at dispersing light over large areas, thus reducing energy consumption even further.

The possibilities for Gweilo are limitless - from architectural applications such as wall and ceiling treatments, to furniture and products, such as counters, benches or handrails. Gweilo could even redefine our experience and engagement with the humble car interior. However, the starting point for this further exploration, is the series of light fixtures shown.

We almost take light in our daily lives for granted. Gweilo allows us to sculpt with light, and in so doing, allows us to celebrate and rediscover light in unlimited ways.
