lavoir

lavoir by Muller Christine from luxembourg

designer's own words:

before we started to work, we asked Mrs Muller about her aversions and preferences. She said.....

I like
- smooth and soft surfaces (nice to touch)
- a lot of storage in wall-closets (nobody should know about my beauty secrets)
- space
- the function of the bidet
- a view when I take take my shower....to have a look at the sky (and to think about how to dress)
- the morning-sun (it makes happy)
- clear and simple forms

I don't like

- cold and shiny surfaces (not nice to touch)
- doors.... I always let them open and think that they should be closed (my education).
- tiles ....and there is no rational reason for that. Oh yes, one: I hate silicone-joints ( they get yellow and filthy).
- glass-walls or doors..... I have to clean them after every shower (my laziness).
- my face in the mirror.... except if I decide to meet myself (my vanity, possibly)
- bidets, because they look like toilets

The bathroom was very small, at the start. But she accepted to tear down a wall and to plan her bedroom and her bathroom as one open space.

So, we developped this lavoir with 3 functions: shower, bidet and washbowl. We placed all the fittings in a row, so that she can use them easily from each side. The hand-shower can be used in the shower if she wants ..... and then it turns out to work like a bidet.

As splash-guard, we propose a fluffy curtain attached at the ceiling around the large shower . The curtain may stay slightly open to have a look at the weather outside. We don't need glass! And we need no tiles, because the lavoir stands free.

The back wall of the room is a closet with all the technical equipments as boiler, watermeter and heating installation. Here she can also hide all her beauty secrets... The mirrors are inside the closet and there is not one single visible mirror around! And everything is into reach, even the towels........ if they are roled instead of folded.

We thougt a lot about the material and came to the conclusion, that CORIAN is the only possible choice: the surface is smooth, soft and not shiny. You can build any forms with it, even sharp-edged forms. Now, the lavoir is her favourite place in the flat. Personal hygiene has become a ritual and a real pleasure. She told us also, that CORIAN is very easy to clean with a micro-fiber rag, even without detergents. Just a detail, but so important for a housewife who wants to apply her ecological awareness in everyday life!
