The Radical Radiator of the Future

Mihai Rad

By Mihai Badulescu.

The radiator shown in the layout has an external dimension of 755.65mm (30") wide x 469.9 mm (18.5") high x 51.3 mm (2") deep. The actual element that carries the hot water has a surface area of 1.558 m2. It is not limited to these dimensions however, as it can be manufactured in higher and/or wider sizes.

Manufacturing

The radiator element (in color) is manufactured in mild steel sheet which is blanked, pressed and welded as appropriate to provide a series of zig-zag channels parallel to the ribs. It may be fabricated as a front and an identical back placed back to back and subsequently connected. Once this part has all connections attached and water ways in place, it is finished with a powder coated paint layer.

The frame that surrounds it, is fabricated from aluminium sheet. It holds the actual radiator through a combination of slots and 4 fasteners. The aluminium is polished and finished with a hard clear anodize (no fluids of the radiator are in contact with the aluminium).

Following is a description of visuals.

5 This pictures illustrates currents of air generated, in addition to radiated heat, as cold air travels through the hollow vertical channels built in the radiator, allowing this cold air to get hot and rising due to lower density.

8 Shows the back of the radiator with bracket for floor mount when not in the proximity of a wall. When in front of a wall, a bracket without a foot fastens it to the wall to give it that floating illusion.

9 shows multiple radiators of the same size, finished in different colours.

Towel holders are available for higher models, or current one if attached to a wall, at a higher distance from the ground.

All manufacturing aspects are common and readily available.
