Moneyless Banking

Moneyless Banking by Harry Trimble from uk

designer's own words:

So much of what we have, has been designed thinking whoever uses it is always on their best behaviour. Bank accounts have created on the same assumption; that we always make decisions to our own benefit; that we can control how much we spend; that we need access to money every moment of the day.

Now imagine a bank account without money, a Moneyless Account. Not empty or over drawn, but without a quantitative means for assessing its size. There is of course money in the account, but you cannot see the balance. Depending on how the owner programs their accounts, it will output a qualitative statement, rather than numerical figure. Responds when asked if they can afford something. Prohibits spending on things when the user choses to self-exclude from.

The benefits of this type of banking are obvious to a larger audience than the specific case of recovering gamblers, as so many of us have problems with self-control to varying extents at least.
