Aim
Looking at design for death, my aims were simple; relocate cemeteries from inconvenience locations to a more central and easier accessibly site, secondly change attitudes towards burial and cemeteries through design and finally the reduction of land taken up by current cemeteries.

Concept of Vertical Green Space ( image 1 )
Currently burial grounds/cemeteries are located on the outskirts of towns and cities; these locations have many disadvantages, such as accessibility, security against vandalism, greenbelt/land regulations and etc.

As cities become more heavily populated, the need for green space becomes more vital. Building singular parks become less affective, and develop issues such as being cramped and impracticable (lack of privacy). My proposal is to address both issues by creating layers of vertical green space which will both act as solutions for the current death care crisis (accessibility, security and land restrictions” and the serve the growing need of greater green space within the city, by mixing recreational space and green spaces with burial plots.

Using design and technology to change attitudes towards cemeteries (image 3)
Using more natural landscaping and the disorganized placement of burial plots within the plan creates a blurred boundary between cemetery and the park, helping improve the functionality of the space.Minimizing plots horizontally the integrating plots with technology, will help create a less physically intimidating environment, and allows technology such as augmented reality to create a more meaningful and personalized virtual environment/experience.

System/Modular Design (image 2, 4 and 5)
The two factors of the design were the constant of death “nothing is certain but death and taxes”, and the needs of the cities. Designing for these two long term factors, could not be resolved through short term building. The design needed to be flexible and be able to response to the shifts and demands of each site. Creating a vertical layered system which is built over long term would act upon these needs and demands of the cities in both death and green space. This will allow for a more contextual response to the solution. The final buildings on these sites will reflect the dynamics of the city in which it was built in.

Concept of Cave (image 6 and 3 )
Researching into burials and trends of types, the last few years have seen a dramatic increase in cremation around 50-70% overall. To make the building more effective as a cemetery, this research had to reflect in the design. The final outcome was to boost the amount of plots by adding a sub level for cremains . A cave like level would highly differ from the other level and would create a surreal atmosphere, this environment and its physical presents will help visitors deal with closure through contrast.
