Oakley Lifeline

Oakley Lifeline by N. Kwiatkowski from italy

designer's own words:

All three systems feature a hub which holds sensors for airbag activation and the small air tank which inflates the airbag upon impact. In the Lifeline Street and Dirt models, this hub is an exterior feature where on the Snow model it is located inside the pack, with ports leading to the straps. The name "Lifeline" comes from the lines that run on the straps of all three bags, designating the seam where the strap splits and the airbag is deployed.

The decision to create a line of backpacks rather than one specific backpack pertinent to the initial inspiration stems from the specific needs of each market. The material and in particular the airbag placement is very different on a airbag backpack intended for street use than one for snow or dirt. Specific design decisions were made based on information and factors from the environment each bag would be used in. I found in research that tailbone and rib injuries are the most common in mountain biking, which influenced the placement of airbags around the riders body structure. The snow model airbag is bright orange, as to contrast the white environment of alpine terrain. The street model illuminates the airbags after inflation, as this model would possibly be used on the street at night. These unique design features to each model create a safer experience in the treacherous environments of alpine sports, travel by pavement, and mountain biking.
