No longer an unexciting, horizontal and rectangular monolith the kitchen island-bench has evolved into an undulating and sensuous workstation taking advantage of the design features of Corian.

Inspiration for the ‘Retroflex’ design came from the need to make a kitchen unit that was not only elegant and contemporary, but that additionally boasted the importance of being ergonomic.

This is a clean, stylish design in response to conventional kitchen utility. The basic character of the traditional kitchen island-bench is enhanced by a whole new approach.

Through the use of heat-treating methods, the curveability and seamless nature of Corian amalgamates to create the ‘Retroflex Workstation’. As a design in itself it was founded on the versatile flexibility and strength of Corian to create distinctive, sweeping curves and perfectly rounded edges.

‘Retroflex’ uses a fusion of mediums including timber veneer together with a bright, matt-finish, 12.3 mm ‘Glacier White’ Corian shell enveloping the entire unit. This creates an appearance and sense of lightness and spaciousness. All profiles on the Corian outer shell are square edge, reinforcing a wrap-around effect.

The oven is set into the workstation and installed at a comfortable height that produces a dramatic effect. Appropriate heat management to preserve the Corian finish, along with a stainless steel shaft placed underneath for added strength, helps to achieve this unique shape. There is a moveable spotlight incorporated directly into the overhang to enhance the functionality of both the sink and work areas. A seamed, under-mounted sink achieves a seamless flow between bench top and sink, and with a routed drainage area maintains the sleek look of the ‘Retroflex Workstation’. Other features of the ‘Retroflex Workstation’ include a dishwasher, push-open cupboards, storage recess and hot plates with integrated heat rods that are removable for easy cleaning.
