Science of the Secondary: Hirosaki Apple

Science of the Secondary: Hirosaki Apple by Atelier HOKO from singapore

designer's own words:

In 2013, Atelier HOKO produced a study titled Science of the Secondary. It is a research project that seeks to uncover ‘secondary’ conditions within our everyday behaviours with things and space. The first subject of study is the Apple where we observe the intrinsic manners in which the fruit is experienced; how we take the first bite, the importance of a nice sounding ‘crunch’, the role of each finger as the apple rotates with each bite. For this competition, we propose a focused research publication towards uncovering the essence of experiencing a Hirosaki Apple.

PLAN:

Observation (2 weeks)
Visit Hirosaki city to make field research and observations on Apples and the intimate ways locals perceive, interact and experience the fruit. Possible inquiries include the behaviours behind choosing and buying a Hirosaki Apple, mapping the colour and shape of various apple genus within the locale, studying the common practice of how the apples are eaten, prepared or stored domestically etc. etc. Notes, drawings and photos will be made to document the field research. These findings will be collected and translated into the book.

Launch (1 week)
To launch the book, we will collaborate with local apple farmers, distributors and shopkeepers to package the publication accompanied with a Hirosaki Apple. In this way, the book and fruit is made accessible, allowing both locals and visitors to enjoy the apple while reading about it.
