states of repose - three pavilions for the departed

states of repose - three pavilions for the departed by Karl Bengzon from usa

designer's own words:

architectural ‘promession’:
disposing of the cemetery / funeral home

instead of creating a single large building or using acres of land, this project proposes multiple small scale interventions distributed among various spaces of the living.

once the idea of the funeral home and the cemetary has passed away, its body will be put through a process of promession. the first step is to freeze the corpse.

in the next step, the frozen remains are shattered by a process of vibration into powder.

the powder is then thawed in a vacuum where moisture is evaporated, leaving only a dry powder.

these remains, architectural fragments, are then scattered among various vacant sites, thus bringing ‘dead’ space back to life.
