Stereotypically spaces are decorated or embellished with furniture and surface coverings like rugs and curtains. Furniture always sits on a rug and the rug invariably folds and gathers in the most awkward of places.
The ‘Stumble-upon’ sofa was inspired by these very folds in a rug or carpet. Enhancing them to create a surface that becomes more than just a trip hazard and transforms it into piece of furniture itself. The floor gathers to create this natural flowing surface that can be rested against or sat upon combining the sofa and rug into one homogeneous element. The idea is further built upon by developing and playing with the textures and thickness of the surface to create different degrees of hardness and softness to complement the use. The fold created can also be tweaked to hold objects like books magazines, remotes, tablets etc. The pockets created by the raised fold creates a negative space underneath that can be then used for storage or display.
Stumble upon can be seen as a modular system that can be put together in numerous configurations and sizes to make it truly adaptable to any given space. It also has the potential to fit in retail and leisure environments. The system is being further explore developed to create elements like tables or consoles that can be adapted to different situations and spaces.
It is also proposed that this element also be used outdoors and could be an ‘extension’ of the landscape or surface treatment externally. The possibilities to individualise it are endless as can be seen in the illustration s with the block pattern in the corner and a ‘kantha’ inspired pattern.
