THE FLOATING FANTASY

THE FLOATING FANTASY by Chan Kai Yan from hong kong

designer's own words:

This installation encourages the public to come together and share the joy and wishes of the holiday season with everyone no matter our differences. Although there are times where it may seem we are very different from one another, there will always be something in common among all of us. This piece does the same, from the two levels it may look like it is each its own installation, but once you've visited both levels, you see that they are not so different after all and are connected and shares the same goal of sending blessings to those around us.

The entire installation is covered in white Washi paper to represent the view of snow along the mountains. The Christmas tree is constructed by Origami to imitate the layering and repetition of a pine tree. The floating ribbon-like structure creates several cozy pocket spaces for small groups of users to enjoy this Christmas with their beloved ones. The piece seemingly penetrates through the floor slab, creating a connection through two levels of the space. The symbolic crane is incorporated in the design as it is referred to as the “bird of happiness”, bringing good fortune and happiness to all who are writing their blessings and wishes in hopes they will come true. The portion of the installation which hangs from the ceiling also has suspended speakers that will play out all the blessing and wishes the users have recorded.
