designer's own words:

In society we have the tendency to clear up or put away things that are broken down. I investigate those attributes in search for a new meaning and destiny. Does its original meaning hold up when it is close to other attributes? Can attributes, when brought together, signify something new?
I believe that ‘an attribute and a new context’ or ‘a new attribute created out of old ones’, stimulate innovation.
Some things in life are inevitable, like the falling of leaves in Autumn. According to Victor Sonna, innovation starts when you give the inevitable some thought. This way, he focuses on discarded bikes which are scattered across the streets like autumn leaves and gives them a new lease on life.
From linear to circular thinking
The challenge facing designers and users lies in achieving the mindset and awareness to put ideas and techniques in the ‘right’ context. The earth is facing problems such as overpopulation and consumerism, but we will keep on using the earth. There’s nothing wrong with that, in my opinion, but the challenge lies in not only using the earth but giving her valuables in return. We should not only think in a linear fashion, but add circular thinking to our mindset. Obviously, this involves letting go a convention.

‘Innovation starts the moment you do something with the inevitable’
In my childhood, I was always playing in the woods. I collected branches from which I built a hut, or I took the branches home with me. Nowadays I live in the city. The appearance of the city is partly shaped by a great number of so-called ‘stray’ bikes. Bikes which have been discarded by their owners or left in the streets of the city. From time to time, these bikes are removed by the municipality because they do not add favorably to the image of the city. Eventually, these bikes are destroyed. In Autumn, branches and leaves fall down, inevitably. In my view, innovation starts the moment you do something with the inevitable, transforming what already exists and placing it in a new context. I transform these ‘stray’ bikes into new useful products.

The above mentioned works are odes to the founding fathers of modern art, with all their distorting, meandering, brilliant concoctions. No smooth rides for them either!! the persistence of memory My origins and identity are in a constant state of tension. My work is being born in this ongoing tension between Being and Becoming. It dares me to retain origins on the one hand and stimulate the ongoing development on the other hand. Entities appear to lead lives of their own, never facing each other but ‘in between’ they are slowly fading into each other, blurring their boundaries. the persistence of memory In our society, we collect, sort out and eventually burn garbage. This rather linear process results in a loss of revenue of about 10 billion Euros per year. In this plan I make a small contribution to use our ´waste´ in a circular manner. the persistence of memory The appearance of the city is partly shaped by a great number of so-called ‘stray’ bikes. Not daring to show the holes in them to my mother, I remade these slippers into a boat, a car or an island. I invented a new context for each particular slipper, giving it a new identity. Reality and image got blurred. For me, an attribute doesn’t necessarily carry the meaning given to it by its context. Instead, an attribute ‘challenges’ me into stripping it from its obvious contextual meaning and giving it a new significance. the persistence of memory The challenge lies in achieving the mindset and awareness to put ideas and techniques in the ‘right’ context.
