designer's own words:

This tile was developed for a kitchen ceiling in a private residence. The pattern image is printed on a transfer which is applied to a 32x32cm big ceramic tile.
Since our budget only allowed us to work with one motif (this tile was only made in a handmade serie of 500 tiles) and therefore we designed a pattern element that can be rotated and thus this pattern consists of virtually four different pattern elements which can be combined in different ways to make slightly different patterns. In that way we could make pattern which repeats over a much larger area than if the pattern would repeat over every 32cm tile. The tiles are used as a kitchen ceilling with fairly high walls so we wanted the pattern to be big and have a graphical impact even though the viewer would never be close to it.
