designer's own words:

vortex is a handle meant to translate comfortability into an aesthetics. since the effort changes from the beginning of the opening until the end in terms of position it is applied and the effort itself. vortex suggests an aesthetics that would fit the hand and the effort it applies through the varying stages of opening.
