designer's own words:

This project is an exploration of the relationship between man-made movements and natural ones. Man-made motion often seems to have very clear objectives: going to work, dancing, playing sports... On the other hand movements found nature are harder to grasp, they might seem erratic or dull, frightening or mystical: waves, earth shaking, the wind.

The Wind is more than motion, it is a universal phenomenon. it is an intriguing manifestation of nature's immensity and one of nature's clearest embodiments of motion.

A windform is an object whose shape and pattern are directly influenced by wind. It is created using a windforming tool (devised out of a Wacom tablet), which captures input from the wind and sends it through a windforming interface (designed using Processing and Grasshopper) to generate forms which can be 3D printed to crystalize this moment of wind.

Infusing new elements of nature, such as the essence of wind, into the artifacts that constitute our daily lives increases their value: on one hand it heightens the user's awareness of their surroundings (wind starts "appearing" everywhere) and on the other hand embeds the evocative value of the wind into the object since it is an instance of wind frozen in time.

Above all, windforming is about creating a new awareness to our natural and industrial environment in the hope of finding a better balance between the two. In other words the wind forming process could be applied to many other objects and the wind forming concept to many other manufacturing processes.
