Crystal Chandelier

The Crystal Chandelier is a kinetic lights art installation for the Tsvetnoy Central Market, a new department store in central Moscow. The 14 meter wide and six meter deep hanging sculpture evokes the impression of a giant crystal chandelier formed by 49 two meter high crystal shaped light elements. The installation generates everchanging shape variations, movement and light animations. In the evening the chandelier starts to glow like a flower of light. At night the art piece falls into hybernation with only very few movements but a very strong pulsating heartbeat of light giving the Tsvetnoy market with its glass facade a unique landmark appeal in Moscows night scenery.

The Crystal Chandelier is based on WHITEvoids modular "Kinetic Lights" System (http://www.kinetic-lights.com). The Kinetic Lights system consists of a matrix of ceiling mounted winch modules with tethered light elements. Each light element can be adjusted individually in height, speed, color and luminance by control software. By synchronizing position and light animation, multiple winch modules are coordinated together to form complex shapes and light patterns. The control system consists of two interconnecting components, a software interface and hardware for digital signal distribution. This enables full real-time control simultaneously over all light elements (actuators or sensors can be used alternatively) and movement for each individual module connected. A wide range of objects can be attached to the Kinetic Lights module. Illumination of the object is an integral part. The specially developed signal cable wound on the winch reel supplies power and multiple signal lines for real-time control of the attached light element (or actuator, sensor, etc.).

The Kinetic Lights winch can easily and securely be attached to standartized truss systems with its mounting bracket. Both grid-based and organic layouts are possible due to the flexible daisy chain connection of power and the control signal.
