fad awards (promoting architecture and design) were created in barcelona in 1958 with the aim of promoting cutting-edge trends and recognize the quality of new approaches and open researches in contrast with traditional languages; in 2006 five award categories were created, and the thought & criticism award is founded, being the only national award of this kind. in this edition, collective architectures book by ediciones vibok and edited by paula alvarez was awarded exequo with the exhibition catalog laboratorio gran vía, published by the telefónica foundation and curated by iñaki abalos. this is the first time that this fad thought & criticism goes to a woman.

ediciones vibok is an architecture publishing & editor house based in seville that combines traditional and new media; its work focuses on the convergence between architecture, other disciplines, spatial and aesthetic practices. although it is a novel publisher, its founder and director paula alvarez has a wide experience as co-editor and co-editor of the magazine neutra of colegio oficial de arquitectos de sevilla (2006-2010), that has been awarded with the malaga promoting architecture prize in 2009, and selected for the vii biau held in medellin, colombia, 2010. the house emerged in 2009 as a personal project of paula alvarez that samuel garcia has joined in 2011.

collective architectures, vibok first title, has its starting point in an initiative by santiago cirugeda (urban recipes) which mobilized dozens of groups to recycle 45 containers-homes from a dismantled temporary settlement, into a multitude of self-built and self-managed spaces that were distributed throughout the spanish territory. this book captures the whole adventure through a selection of ten projects developed between 2007 and 2010, as well as written contributions from different authors, including saskia sassen, david g. torres and ramon parramón, in what constitutes a coral essay on the possibility of connecting politics, life and architecture.

paula alvarez’s edition commitment it to narrate this experience through living work, social relationships, affects and everyday interactions, emphasizing the role of these intangible dimensions in the production of architecture and environment. this book tries to disregard the architectural object in order to formulate a creative project instead: an online open book that aspires to be continued, assembling facts and desires, everyday stories and critical thinking. the design of the book is the outcome of a close collaboration between the editor and designers office buenos días that highlights this idea, inviting reader’s imagination and participation in the remake of this book.
