Thistle & Bloom Boutique Hotel is shaped by a layered narrative

Thistle & Bloom, conceived by Hazel Yu, reimagines the boutique hotel as an immersive hospitality environment informed by the narrative world of Thumbelina. Conceived as a sequence of interconnected spaces, the conceptual project combines storytelling, lighting, and spatial design to create a hospitality experience shaped by gradual discovery and atmospheric transitions. Winding circulation routes, concealed lounge areas, and a sunken lily-pad-inspired lobby establish a setting that draws on themes from the fairytale while translating them into a contemporary interior environment.

The project explores the hotel not simply as a place of accommodation, but as a spatial journey. Inspired by the story and visual language of Thumbelina, the design process focused on translating key narrative moments into architectural experiences. Rather than directly recreating scenes from the tale, the project extracts underlying themes and emotions associated with specific episodes and transforms them into spatial and material interventions.

Several chapters of the story informed the overall design framework, including the swamp, the underground tunnel, and the injured swallow sequence. These references became starting points for exploring ideas related to desire, control, vulnerability, survival, and concealment. Existing architectural conditions also influenced the layout. Working around a central elevator core, the design introduces two winding corridors that wrap around the building’s central zone, creating a sense of progression and gradual revelation throughout the interior.

immersive interiors shaped by story-driven spatial fragments

The lobby functions as the primary narrative space. At its center is a sunken conversation pit inspired by the swamp scene from Thumbelina, reinterpreted as a lily-pad-like gathering area. Elongated built-in planters surround the space, partially screening views and creating a layered relationship between visitors and vegetation. The arrangement encourages movement through the space while reinforcing the project’s immersive qualities.

Adjacent hospitality spaces continue the narrative framework by designer Hazel Yu. A cocktail bar draws inspiration from the underground tunnel sequence, translating the story’s arched spatial language into the ceiling design. Opposite, a semi-open lounge references the injured swallow chapter through a birdcage-inspired structure. Rather than functioning as a literal interpretation, the enclosure explores the tension between protection and restriction, reflecting recurring themes within the story. The project’s visual identity is shaped by a palette of deep greens and purples derived from various illustrated and cinematic interpretations of Thumbelina. Darker tones contribute to a cinematic atmosphere while maintaining the characteristics of a contemporary boutique hotel. Metallic accents are integrated throughout the interiors, introducing reflections and subtle shifts in light across the space.

Beyond the public areas, the guest rooms continue the narrative approach. The bedroom concept references Thumbelina’s walnut-shell bed, translating its visual qualities into a built form that combines enclosure, comfort, and symbolism. This interpretation informed the development of a recessed bed element that recalls both canopy beds and crown-like silhouettes. Rounded corners and offset geometries extend throughout the room, creating continuity with the flowing circulation strategies established elsewhere in the project. As in the lobby, the layout is designed to reveal itself gradually rather than all at once.

circulation as a narrative device in a layered hospitality space

A notable aspect of the project is the use of circulation as a storytelling device. The winding routes surrounding the central lobby are reinforced by integrated planters that divide views and create moments of partial visibility between occupants. The resulting spatial experience emphasizes movement, anticipation, and layered perspectives. Above the central conversation pit, a large dome introduces a vertical focal point that works together with the sunken floor to reinterpret classical spatial hierarchy within a contemporary hospitality setting.

One of the primary design challenges involved translating a widely recognized fairytale into architectural language without relying on literal representation. The process required the organization of narrative references into spatial, material, and formal strategies capable of supporting both functionality and atmosphere. Through the development of multiple studies, references, and iterations, the project explores how storytelling can inform contemporary hospitality design while maintaining architectural coherence.

The central sunken lobby remains one of the defining elements of the proposal, linking the project back to one of the story’s most recognizable settings while establishing a distinct spatial identity. Combined with concealed views, winding circulation, and thematic references embedded throughout the interior, the project examines how narrative-driven design can shape the experience of movement, perception, and discovery within a hotel environment.
