LocalloopBKK: translating local voices into AI-led urban design

LocalloopBKK is a participatory design tool developed in Bangkok, Thailand, to translate community input into spatial proposals for public space. Created by Prapawit Intun / Participatory Citizen Lab, the platform combines participatory research methods with AI-assisted design tools to support collaboration between residents, designers, and policymakers. The system explores how local needs, environmental conditions, and social feedback can be converted into structured inputs for urban design. Through workshops, interviews, and community engagement activities, residents contribute observations and priorities related to the spaces they use. These inputs are then processed through a digital workflow that links qualitative research with spatial design generation.

LocalloopBKK collects community feedback and organizes it into categories relevant to public space design. These include comfort, use and service, circulation and wayfinding, lighting and utilities, safety and control, and decoration and aesthetics. The collected information is then translated into prompts that guide AI-assisted design generation. The platform’s workflow combines prompt design, 3D asset generation, spatial optimization, database storage, and frontend visualization. Based on the prompts derived from community feedback, the system produces modular public-space components and spatial layout proposals. These elements can be assembled into preliminary design scenarios that reflect the priorities expressed by participants.

turning neighborhood insights into spatial data and planning

The generated outputs are organized within a digital dashboard that displays spatial proposals and related data. The interface allows patterns in community preferences to be identified across different neighborhoods. This information can support discussions around design guidelines, planning strategies, and public policy related to urban public spaces. By converting qualitative feedback into visual spatial proposals, the system developed by Prapawit Intun / Participatory Citizen Lab aims to facilitate communication between community members and professionals involved in urban development.

LocalloopBKK was developed through collaboration with communities in Bangkok and contributes to ongoing research in participatory urbanism, civic technology, and community-centered design processes. The platform positions participation not as a symbolic consultation step but as a source of structured design data. Through the integration of community engagement, computational tools, and spatial visualization, the project proposes a method for developing public-space proposals that respond to local conditions and resident priorities within the urban context of Bangkok.
