each peau de bois carpet is handmade by artists with pure artistic sensibility and natural materials. the trompe l’oeil effect of wood grain on the hide instills the raw beauty of the material with a sense of curiosity and intellectual stimulation.

in conceptualizing the peau de bois, deborah moss wanted to return to her roots as an artist – to create an autonomous source of beauty and inquiry without a specific commission in mind. in addition to a clear sense of artistry, she desired the series to reflect the value of natural materials, hand-craftsmanship, and intellectual stimulation consistently sought by moss & lam.

the peau de bois illustrations are individually hand-drawn to scale by the artist after which they are scanned, converted to a vector image, and then laser etched onto the natural hide. surprisingly, it was challenging for the deborah to achieve a simple version of wood grain that is immediately recognizable, yet alluring and unique to the series. to achieve the uniqueness of wood grain, she drew multiple drafts of each illustration, perfecting the level of detail, the depth of shadow, and the richness of contour.

the finished product is nothing short of an artwork, rich in whimsicality and intellectual stimulation, which can be situated on the floor or on a wall.
