Column Chair: a modular seating system by Yuhan (Ivan) Gu

The Column Chair by New York–based industrial designer Yuhan (Ivan) Gu is a modular seating system structured around movable cylindrical cushions. The design combines a curved wooden frame with a woven rope grid, forming a seating object that allows different configurations and postures through the repositioning of its soft elements.

Rather than defining a fixed ergonomic position, the chair approaches seating as a flexible system that responds to the body’s shifting movements. Curved wooden side structures establish the main frame and provide structural stability, while a subtly arched base introduces a slight rocking motion. This curved base allows the chair to move gently with the user, creating a dynamic relationship between the body and the furniture.

At the center of the design is a series of cylindrical cushions that can be repositioned across the frame. These movable components allow the user to adjust support depending on the desired posture, ranging from upright sitting to more relaxed reclining positions. Through this system, the chair treats comfort as a variable condition shaped by arrangement rather than a fixed ergonomic solution.

drawing inspiration from traditional hammock structures

A key development challenge involved maintaining structural strength while preserving a visually light frame. Instead of rigid crossbars, the design incorporates a woven rope grid suspended between the wooden side structures. Inspired by the tension-based construction of hammocks, the rope network distributes weight across the frame while maintaining an open and lightweight appearance.

This tension system functions both structurally and visually, defining the central seating surface while supporting the movable cushions. Through a woven pattern, designer Yuhan (Ivan) Gu introduces texture and flexibility while reinforcing the modular nature of the seating system.

The Column Chair was first presented in 2023 as part of Unmaking, Making, Remaking, an exhibition hosted by Somewhere in New York. Following its debut, the project received a Gold award from the MUSE Design Awards. Currently developed as a one-off studio prototype, the design continues to be explored as a system that could be adapted for future production while maintaining its modular and interactive framework.
