UNO Stool is formed from a single injection-molded piece

UNO Stool by Wenhan Zhang reconsiders modular furniture through a single-piece, injection-molded construction. Manufactured from one mold without hardware or assembly, the stool shifts the concept of modularity away from mechanical connection and toward spatial arrangement. Rather than relying on joinery systems or interchangeable parts, UNO eliminates connectors entirely. Adaptability is achieved through quantity, color, and configuration, allowing the stool to scale across residential and public interiors as flexible seating landscapes.

The stool is produced as a one-piece injection-molded form, requiring no screws, inserts, or tools. By removing hardware and assembly, the design reduces potential failure points commonly associated with modular systems, such as loose fasteners or fatigued clips. The result is a durable, low-maintenance object suited to environments where furniture is frequently moved or reconfigured.

simplified construction minimizes material complexity

Formally, UNO features a compact silhouette with subtle tapering that balances stability and visual lightness. As a single object, it functions as an independent seating element. In multiples, it operates as a spatial system: units can be grouped into clusters, arranged in linear formations, or dispersed to accommodate changing programs. Color serves as an additional compositional layer. Variations in hue enable users to reorganize seating arrangements and adjust the visual character of a space without relying on complex structural systems.

The project, developed by interior designer Wenhan Zhang, also addresses material and lifecycle considerations. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings entered municipal solid waste in 2018. By reducing component count and avoiding mixed-material hardware connections, UNO simplifies construction and minimizes potential complications associated with multi-part assembly. Its single-piece structure reduces assembly errors and aims to extend product usability through durability and ease of reconfiguration.
