SODA architects decorates a restaurant in beijing with fairytale undersea patterns

located in the basement of the APM shopping mall in wangfujing street, beijing, the new blufish restaurant is designed by soda architects. the place resembles an underwater world, which is full of fantasy and motion.

the international architectural practice is based in paris and beijing, and was founded by jiang yuan and song chen. the architects gained their artistic and architectural experience working in internationally renowned offices, such as the ateliers jean nouvel.

white is used as the basic color here, while the blue and pink metal mesh livens up the interior, spreading down from the ceiling. the mesh is made through a laser-cut process, and attached to the white smooth surface of the walls and ceiling, which creates a unique underwater image with gorgeous, translucent, vague visual effects. ‘we expect people to feel cozy and relaxed here, as if mediterranean sea breeze in southern france is blowing‘, the architects explain.

the sense of continuity of the two dining areas is enhanced by the naturally curved surface, making the space seem flawless, while also using the room’s height effectively. the lack of sharp edges extends the space, creating four undersea cave-like units as independent dining locations.

to echo the theme of the restaurant and express the warmth of the scene, soda team chose six kinds of hand-drawn fairytale patterns. they seem simple and familiar, and represent the underwater coral, aquatic plants, and schools of fish.
