the purpose of studio tylevich’s project is to preserve the memory of the previous library on this site before an expanded new library is built in its place. the old library, with its iconic oversized metal ‘library’ installation outside, held many memories for its patrons and passersby. the project team’s recently installed project celebrates the collective memory and continued significance of this place.

conceptually and architecturally straightforward, american based studio tylevich‘s artwork is an elegant addition to the library interiors. two art installations join the area of the clerestory windows in the west interior. the art concept supports the architectural symmetry of the windows and allows for light to continue to come through them.

both installations consist of seven glass panels. the panels, positioned at different angles in front of the clerestory windows, form a memorable abstract composition. at certain points during the day, the panels will visually align to spell out the two words ‘walker’ and ‘library’. the installation panels are made of laminated tempered dichroic glass. the goldish panels complement the color of the light monitors at the front of the building.

glass shapes of different colors are embedded within each panel. each glass panel is 80-inches high and 30 inches wide, and each supported by two custom-designed metal brackets. each bracket has movable parts activated by a quiet motor positioned on structural elements at the clerestory.

the artwork is fabricated using the most innovative and advanced technologies. this artwork is fully integrated into the building’s design. the two installations — like ‘bonded’ elements – visually bring together different parts of the building
