hugh hefner (1926 - 2017) was the founder of playboy magazine, media mogul, advocate of sexual liberation and freedom of expression, political activist, and philanthropist. the american icon introduced the world to playboy magazine in 1953 and built the company into one of the most recognizable american global brands in history. in 1980, hefner championed the reconstruction of the hollywood sign and was honored with a star on the hollywood walk of fame for his efforts.
