rammed earth showcases a range of projects that employ this ancient construction technique in new ways. rammed earth — also known as ‘pise’ — is a building method that dates back thousands of years and has been developed in many parts of the world. the technique utilizes natural raw materials such as earth, chalk, lime, or gravel, to create foundations, floors, and walls with many favorable properties: the structures are low-tech, low-cost, energy efficient, recyclable, low maintenance, and provide resistance to both cold and hot climates. the traditional method is based on compacting soil between formwork boards, which are then removed to leave a solid rammed earth wall.
