THONET is known for its expertise in bending solid wood furniture -- a technique that its founder and master carpenter michael thonet perfected during the 1850s. this method established the transition from manual furniture production to industrial production for the company, with its breakthrough being chair 'no. 14', later the 'vienna coffee house chair'. this piece of furniture cleared the way for THONET to become a global enterprise, with numerous successful bentwood designs to follow.
on a recent trip to the bauhaus in dessau, germany, designboom joined thonet to discover how together, they forged a totally different design aesthetic from which we all benefit from today.
