1964 amphicar model 770 has two propellers to drive on water

finished in Fjord Green

A private seller has put up this 1964 Amphicar Model 770, the car design finished in Fjord Green over yellow and white and powered by a 1,147cc Triumph inline-four mated to a two-part manual gearbox that delivers four forward speeds and reverses on land while forward and reverse on water through the twin propellers. Its features also include marine navigational LED lighting, a nautical horn, a bilge pump, bumper/propeller guards, rear tail fins, 13″ steel wheels, whitewall tires, a Kenwood amplifier, and a JL Audio Bluetooth receiver. ‘The car is said to have spent time in Maine before being acquired by the seller in 2016 and subsequently refurbished in 2018. This Amphicar is offered with a clean Kansas title in the seller’s name,’ the seller writes.

two-part Hermes transmission

Watching the video above, the car wades through the water, creating ripples as it forwards, reverses, and steers. The blue-green shade stands out even against the dim light, and the sunshine interior lined with strips of white invites the riders to sit and enjoy the ride. ‘Power is delivered to the rear wheels, the dual nylon propellers, or both through a two-part Hermes transmission with a four-speed manual gearbox for driving the wheels and another two-speed gearbox with forward and reverse gears for the propellers. The transmission is said to have been rebuilt during the refurbishment,’ the seller writes.

Equipment and other features

The front wheels serve as rudders when the car is afloat, and braking while on the ground is handled by hydraulic drums at each wheel. The cabin features front and rear bench seats upholstered in yellow vinyl with white accents that complement the matching door panels. The vehicle’s equipment includes a locking glove box, black-coated floors, rubber floor mats, door-sealing locks, hand-crank and vent windows, a heater and defroster, a Kenwood amplifier, and a JL Audio Bluetooth receiver. The electrical systems are said to have been converted to the negative ground during the refurbishment. As of publishing, the bid has reached $47,000.
