there’s a fine balance between luxury and sportiness. revealed digitally, instead of at the cancelled geneva motor show 2020, the 2021 genesis G80 midsize sedan is a design of dualism, contrasts and juxtaposition. it actually exemplifies the south korean brand’s newest expression of their design. this is to create an aesthetic that strikes a balance between two seemingly opposing characteristics: athleticism and elegance.

the genesis design DNA begins from the logo itself, said luc donckerwolke, executive vice president, chief design officer of hyundai motor group. ‘the crest of the logo becomes the crest grille and the two lines of the wings become the quadlamps. in other words, the design starts with the brand, and design is the brand.

these signature elements on its front are mirrored at its rear, where the genesis G80’s quadlamps sit either side of the negative surface of the decklid. from its side view, the car is shaped by a smooth, coupe-like roofline that hints at both its style and practicality. a long sweeping parabolic line flows along its shoulderline, before gently descending as it nears the rear. in contrast, the chrome window frames ascend towards its back.

inside, the architecture appears sunken in order to deliver a luxurious environment without adding visual weight. this, as well as the reduced thicknesses of the A-pillars, ensure the driver and passengers have wide, uninterrupted views of road ahead and around them. its dashboard is deconstructed into an open space, where a 14.5-inch infotainment screen sits proudly in the middle. light brown wood and upholstery contrast with its black surfaces to accentuate width and the spaciousness of the cabin.

  • I just drove the 2020 G80 in Fort Myers Florida yesterday and Jimmy “Hyundai” told me to google or U tube the new design. I do love the car but now am a bit surprised by the change of “infotainment screen” placement? Why take it out of the beautiful streamlined dashboard?

  • I find this in general a nice car and I like the idea of the turning lights taking place after the wheel arches. The only thing I ask myself is for how long do we have to see Audis’ or Mercedeses’ design like cars… If one takes out all the embellishment lines on this model, can clearly see the mix between a Merecdes E Coupè and the beautiful De Silva’s Audi A5 with a touch of Aston Martin/Mazda on the front…

  • I think it will be a game changer ,BMW 750, Mercedes 550,Audi A8, and on.
Much cheaper than any of those other luxury cars.
