the next apple iPhone 8 is set to feature a 3d face recognition system state recent reports. according to bloomberg, the new model will replace the currently used touch ID fingerprint reader in a bid to improve security. the phone will use a depth sensor that will register faces with unmatched accuracy and speed, unlocking devices in less than a few hundred milliseconds.

the device even functions whilst laying flat on a table, rather than just close up to the face of the viewer. it is reported that this feature collects more data points than a fingerprint scan, which in turn makes it more secure than the touch id system. the overall intention for the new model is to replace the older format with a new security system that will allow users to log in, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps by scanning their face.
