audio-technica revives Sound Burger portable turntable

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, audio brand Audio-Technica is rereleasing its legendary Sound Burger in a limited edition launch. The revamped AT-SB2022 portable turntable brings the 1980s fan-favorite up to date with modern music listening, with new features like Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in lithium-ion battery with USB-C charging capability. Shaped like a bright red ‘sandwich’ arm, the turntable has a lightweight design that makes it perfect for compact living spaces and outdoor events.

straight out of the 80s

Launched in 1980, the Sound Burger AT727 offered people the ability to listen to their favorite 33-1/3 and 45 vinyl records outside their homes. The 2022 version of the Sound Burger is nearly identical to the original design and offers modern vinyl lovers a glimpse into the retro era. The portable turntable has the same sleek case as the ’80s edition, holding only the center of the record and exposing the grooves and tonearm. Designed for both mobility and stability, the tonearm features a dynamic balancing system that uses a spring to apply pressure to the stylus. Thanks to the high-precision DC motor, the platter also rotates stably. This unique turntable features a die-cast aluminum alloy platter with damping and a replaceable ATN3600L needle.

Audio-Technica has added Bluetooth 5.2 support, allowing users to listen to their records through wireless headphones. It also eliminates the need for clunky batteries, as the revamped portable turntable charges via USB-C. The audio company claims that the turntable lasts for about 12 hours before it needs to be recharged. The only downside is that the new Sound Burger can only horizontally, which means you won’t be able to listen to your favorite records while walking around. According to a sign on the side of the player, the company will only produce 7,000 units, each one at a price of $199 (€229).
