vincenzo de cotiis explores materiality onboard azimut yachts magellano 25 metri

within the refined, penthouse-like exterior of azimut yachts’ magellano 25 metri, architect and designer vincenzo de cotiis has created an interior reflective of his artistic fusion of luxurious and raw materials. the space is also an expression of the italian yacht manufacturer’s own DNA, as they continuously experiment to define new formal languages of luxury out on the open water. the vessel combines the latest performance and safety technologies alongside its unique style and design choices, most notably the artist’s signature use of fiberglass.

stepping into the wonder created by de cotiis, designboom sails onboard the azimut yachts’ magellano 25 metri at an exclusive preview show in portofino, italy.

from its conception, vincenzo de cotiis wanted to go beyond the idea of the yacht as simply a container for beauty. the interiors of the azimut yachts magellano 25 metri conveys the designer and brand’s shared interest in the use of fiberglass – it is an essential construction material for both. here, the ‘artistic fiberglass’ is given a new life with a special type of resin. multiple layers are artisanally applied along with bronze powder to create parchment-colored surface intriguing with a cloud effect. this surface conveys an image akin to precious stones. this is paired with other materials to create a highly appealing play of contrasts, including brushed verde alpi marble, dark walnut wood, polished brass, lacquered wood, and ribbed wood.

a huge saloon on the main deck is the heart of the interior. it aims to increase the perception of depth, is designed to offer a view of the sea from any point, and is bathed in natural lighting. the furnishings are all of organic geometry to create a sense of continuity throughout. this is mirrored on the dry bar outside to distinguish a distinct indoor-outdoor connection that unifies all the spaces. an artificial light system creates a soft, warm mood at night, orchestrated with lamps, classic ceiling spotlights, and even LED strips below the furnishings to give an impression of being suspended.

below, on the lower deck, the night area contains four cabins including two VIPS, one double and one with sliding double beds. the owner’s suite is unique for two reasons: it features a walk-in closet, and it is set up on as a floating capsule to reduce vibrations from the propeller. all the fabrics onboard are by loro piana interiors, and the walls are finished in a mirror coating to add to the sense of depth. there is also a high sense of privacy for those onboard. the crew quarters are independent with direct access from the gallery to avoid interference with the guests’ movements.

the organic forms of the interior are also mirrored with the furnishings outside, which can sit on either the sunbed or lounge area on the bow, or on the infinity terrace of the stern. designed by ken freivokh, the exterior is driven by the desire to create an object of timeless appeal. the fully-glazed superstructure conveys the feeling a penthouse overlooking the sea. retro-styled windows in the hull and slatted teak panels on either side aft of the deckhouse gives more personality to the silhouette. an elegant, mirrored spiral staircase climbs up from the main deck to the fly deck, where the hard top is supported by a minimalist central mast. the sophisticated appearance of the hull itself is burnished brass in color with a mustard beauty stripe.

as well as its unique style and design, the azimut yachts’ magellano 25 metri builds upon the latest technology for safety and performance. to start, the architecture can be expanded while maintaining excellent levels of stability. secondly, the award-winning air sanitizing system features a hotel mode function which allows the main onboard services to function longer when the boat is anchored, and without the need to start the generators. this system is NASA patented as seen on their spacecraft. the special fuel-efficient dual mode hull, designed by pierluigi ausonio, offers long-range cruising in the utmost comfort and safety. it cushions wave impact and reduces consumption at different cruising speeds. fitted with two MAN engines rates 1,400 hp each, the top speed is 24/25 knots and cruising speed is 21 knots.
