BAIT turns G-SHOCK’s classic DW5600 into a perfectly ripe banana
dubbed 'yamagata’s finest,' BAIT covers the yellow body of this G-SHOCK DW5600 in the brown freckles of a perfect banana.
a G-SHOCK DW5600 for THE PRODUCE AISLE
A banana has a very small window when everything is right. Most would agree that it reaches its prime once the skin turns bright yellow, and a slight scattering of brown freckles begin to appear. BAIT turns that familiar bit of timing into the premise for its latest G-SHOCK collaboration, wrapping the classic DW5600 in the colors and spots of a banana ready to eat. Called Yamagata’s Finest, the watch covers its resin case and band in saturated yellow with scattered brown marks, giving one of G-SHOCK’s most recognizable silhouettes a strangely convincing new skin.
Ripeness comes down to timing, and BAIT takes that connection far enough to make the fruit theme feel built into the object. A pale gray face surrounds the digital display while the yellow resin extends around the square bezel and down the strap. Dark flecks appear at different angles across the band instead of settling into a repeated graphic pattern. From a distance, it reads as a bright yellow G-SHOCK. Up close, the bruises and sugar spots give away the idea.

‘YAMAGATA’S FINEST’ LOOKS BACK TO CASIO’S JAPANESE PRODUCTION LINE
The name pulls the story back toward Japan. Yamagata Prefecture is home to Casio’s Premium Production Line, and BAIT uses the collaboration as a playful tribute to the place behind some of the company’s most precisely produced watches. The connection gives the banana concept another layer beyond its color. ‘Yamagata’s Finest’ sounds like the label on a prized piece of produce, while referring directly to Casio’s manufacturing presence in the prefecture.
BAIT and G-SHOCK keep that produce branding moving through the smaller details. Their cartoon mascot, Shawty with Freckles, appears engraved on the caseback and flashes across the display when the LED backlight is activated. The character turns up again on the packaging, where the watch arrives inside a custom tin and outer box treated like something pulled from a fruit shipment. A nutrition-label-style graphic covers the tin, translating the familiar language of packaged food into watch information.

sweetening A FAMILIAR G-SHOCK BASE
Under its spotted yellow surface, Yamagata’s Finest keeps the standard toughness associated with the DW5600. The digital watch uses a shock-resistant structure and offers water resistance to 200 meters. Its familiar functions include a 1/100-second stopwatch and countdown timer, alongside an alarm and LED backlight. The square format stays largely intact, which helps the banana treatment land. BAIT has changed the personality of the object while leaving its recognizable foundation easy to read.
The collaboration also understands when to stop decorating. There is no sculpted banana case or oversized fruit hanging from the strap. Color, freckles and packaging do most of the work. It is a fairly ridiculous premise handled with enough restraint that the DW5600 still looks like a watch someone could actually wear.
